MEP works on infrastructure project - Piloting

As what i mentioned in few posting back, there is a few terms usually used in MEP infra works, one is what we called "utilities piloting", whereby that we actually excavate a few pit on a particular spot to see the physical body of the utilize like cables, water line, sewerage line. And there is where the cultural of 'korek tampal' which you always seen on all Malaysia road which cause damage to tyres and might also cause accident . How i wish, it could be better if our quality of as-built drawing is 100% accurate on site, but even authorities drawing is not on par as site most of the time. So, to confirm on utilities located below ground, only way is to do there piloting here and there and cause pot hole here and there.. hahaha....

Asides, there is some interesting information on doing work in infra project which involved some tools which you will never see in MEP building works.

There is this tool we called  "Precision Locate" which used to trace live cable beneath underneath the soil. It works by tracing the inductance which induced by current passing thru the live cable.

And with that, we can actually lowered our risk to damage any cable running underneath, but yet, this precision locate have the downfall as it does not able to trace telco cables or offline cables.

I had did some research on the tools and found out this company called Radiodetection which actually invented that. Maybe you would like to download a user manual to know more about that ? Help yourself  !

Oil Filled Cable and Paper Insulated Lead Cable

As many HT cable on site are been installed since back in the 60s or 70s, a lot of TNB cable found underground are usually this two types, that is

1. Oil Filled Cable
2. Paper Insulated Lead Sheathed Cable - PILC

These two cables been heavily in used for utilities back in the 1970s as before armored cable or even XLPE cable being use.

And when diversion needed for this cable, usually many steps and precautions actually needed for that.

I have include some information on transition joint for the diversion works which is written by cable jointer manufacturer. Raychem.

HDD and Pipe Jacking in MRT site

In MRT site where all the pier are sitting on the highways, utilities usually needed to be relocated to avoid the bore pile and the pile cap location, as open trenches is hardly done with the speedway dense traffic

So, there are actually few ways to do it.

1. Horizontal Directional Drilling - HDD @ info from wikipedia :
Directional boring, commonly called horizontal directional drilling or HDD, is a steerable trenchless method of installing underground pipes, conduits and cables in a shallow arc along a prescribed bore path by using a surface-launched drilling rig, with minimal impact on the surrounding area. Directional boring is used when trenching or excavating is not practical. It is suitable for a variety of soil conditions and jobs including road, landscape and river crossings. Installation lengths up to 2000 m have been completed, and diameters up to 1200 mm have been installed in shorter runs.

2. Pipe Jacking or micro-tunneling
It is a method of making the pipeline in underground by pushing the pipe from the driving shaft with the jack. Today,it is the main method used for pipe laying to preserve the natural environment and maintain pleasant living condition.

I bet it is hard to visualise the process of it, i had attach herewith the youtube link for the convenience.

MEP life - MRT project

A little bit busy with work these few days, got no time for actually drop some inking here.

As I used to be MEP Engineer from building works; civil's MEP works looks quite different, but it still same in some services, mostly dealing with HT, LV, Telco, Sewer, Drain, Water Services...

A lot of work dealing with authorities, telco, traffic control. A lot of work of finding cable underground, water pipes, then go piloting, mapping, jacking, excavating, cut n joint cable, hot tapping piping works.

Will get the process describe further as I myself unsure how it works now actually.

Catch up again..

U Value and OTTV amendment on UBBL 2014 will impact construction industry

According to some trusted source i got during the weekend hangout with friends, UBBL will have an amendment on implementing stringent U Value and OTTV design on heat load calculation and hence that will impact the whole industry as a whole.

Standing on contractor's point of view that means higher cost on C&S side on roof insulation and glasses will be a result of cost increment. While for M&E side, with better roof insulation and glazing glasses, that means lower heat load, smaller cooling equipment size, cables, plant room, etc etc.

So, still a win-win ? Will this a kick-start of government enforcement towards green design ? Let's see....

Back to Construction as Supplier now !

Hello readers,

After spending years up and down running thru market research, marketing, O&G, palm oil industries and such...

With some luck, with partnering with a partner, i am now a sole distributor of Air Sterilization Units using UV Technology, named UVGI Systems from UK.

UVGI stands for Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation, a method of sterilization with guaranteed ultra clean air. UVGI Systems developed the air sterilizations units that give measurable performance results. It works as a mutagen to bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms by disruption of the microorganism DNA. With the UVGI Systems creation, the excellent indoor air quality can be achieved and everyone can benefit from the Ultra Clean Air – guaranteed.

And with using this products, it do score innovation point (IN) for exceptional performance set by Green Building Index (GBI) rating systems.

I wonder how much of you actually have actually met me in person or receive my email throughtout my marketing process ? Let me know, i offer you a drinks in return :D!

O&G vs construction

Recently, bumped to an old friend of mine during high school in oil & gas industry, am quite surprise that he did well in there, kinda envy of his pay and benefit from the MNC company located in Malaysia. Small fries in the company but getting paid on-par with some local GM/Director pay.

Deep inside me, I thought will it be a better route if i go towards this O&G industry as it fetch as much as i could rather than in construction industry, plus dealing with international parties will for sure outshine my resume on that.

Since my part time job is now dealing with supplying heat exchanger tube for heat exchanger manufacturing in O&G industry, it might be a better hop for job prospective in the near future if i am in O&G industry now.

"Oil & Gas" - a very big term in the economic world... worth every reader 2 sec thought on that... : )
